Game Review: Preds Win Cat Fight, 3-1

Steve Mitchell / US PRESSWIRE

Pekka Rinne shines as the Nashville Predators defeat The Florida Panthers 3-1 at Bank Atlantic Center. With his 39 save performance, G Pekka Rinne ties the Predators single season franchise wins record with 36 (Vokoun 05-06). There is no doubt that for much of this game, but especially in the 1st period that the all world net minder was the difference against a feisty Panthers team.

The Preds did what you must on the road playing against a solid & angry team (Fla lost 7-0 to Winipeg previous game) by surviving the major push that saw them out shot 9-2 in the 1st 10 mins of the game. Once The Preds were able to get the ice tilted back to even, they were displaying some solid passing and refreshed legs after a couple days off. Then Andrei Kostitsyn carried the puck in the offensive zone & fired a great wrist shot far side off the post & in for his 1st as a Predator (Gaustad & Gill got the assists–Poile trade tri fecta). 28 seconds into the 2nd period, Martin Erat worked a puck loose behind the Panthers net & made a tape to tape pass to Mike Fisher who finished off the play for his team leading 19th goal of the season. Florida would continue to push strong & pick up a goal on an odd man rush after a turn over by A Kostitsyn in the offensive zone.

The PK by the Preds, especially David Legwand was able to limit the Panthers to 5 shots on 3 full PP attempts. Legwand continued his strong play in the 3rd converting for his 15th goal on a breakaway after a great pass from A Kostitsyn in the neutral zone to make the score 3-1. Pekka Rinne then slams the door & hands go up!
