Wilson, Ekholm Injured In Weekend Victories
The Nashville Predators earned 2 wins over the weekend in defeating the Rangers 3-2 at home, then traveled to Florida and secured a comeback win via shootout by the same score. The team opened up a 4 point lead in the Central division over St. Louis, but that is secondary to the health of a couple big contributors.
On Saturday, Colin Wilson went down with an upper-body injury early on after a solid check by Dan Girardi. Though Wilson didn’t go down, it was clear that the hit was the cause of him missing the rest of the game. Until more information is known, Wilson is listed as day-to-day. With no time for practice between games, Olli Jokinen went from a healthy scratch, to being inserted on the 2nd line alongside Mike Fisher and James Neal. Hopefully Wilson’s injury isn’t serious and can return to action sooner rather than later.
Sunday saw the Preds score twice in the third period to force OT and eventually earn a shootout victory over the Panthers. Unfortunately, this was also a costly victory as Mattias Ekholm went into the boards head first after being tangled up with Jimmy Hayes and Alexander Barkov late in the 2nd period. Not surprisingly, Ekholm missed the rest of the game with an upper body injury. We suspect that he may have suffered a concussion, but the hopes are that he may have just strained his neck.
More information will be known about both players on Monday, but the Preds will bring up a defenseman from Milwaukee. If I had to guess, I expect Ian White to be brought up as he has over 500 games of experience at the NHL level, and has performed extremely well for the Admirals, tallying 13 points in 21 games.
